Chief Executive Officer

Dr. Daniel Kirchert is a well-respected executive in the automotive industry, with a wealth of practical experience in premium automotive branding, products, sales and corporate strategy. Dr Kirchert combines a global vision with unique in-depth local insights and is widely regarded in the industry as an expert on the automotive landscape in China.

 

Dr. Kirchert founded BYTON, a smart premium electric vehicle brand, in 2016, and since then he has built a global team that combines cutting-edge technology development with manufacturing experience to produce connected, intelligent vehicles. He set up BYTON’s global headquarters in Nanjing as well as operations across China, the US and Europe, and has fostered a commitment across the company to building the next-generation smart device. Under his leadership, BYTON’s M-Byte Concept captured the public’s attention during its debut at CES 2018, with the ongoing development of its spectacular design and futuristic smart cabin creating worldwide recognition of the brand concept “Time to be.” Meanwhile, BYTON’s global manufacturing base was successfully developed in Nanijng, which will ensure that vehicles will soon start rolling off the line for customers around the world.

 

Before starting BYTON, Dr. Kirchert held senior executive positions, including Managing Director of Infiniti China, President of Dongfeng Infiniti Motor Co., Ltd., and Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd., where he led the brand in achieving record sales in China.

 

Dr. Kirchert has a master degree in mathematics from Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich and a PhD in Economics. He is a fluent speaker of Chinese, English and German. He is passionate about Chinese culture and has been living in China for over two decades since his time as a student at Nanjing University in 1998. He is a Chinese tea enthusiast and enjoys playing basketball. Dr. Kirchert is married with two children.

 

Dr. Kirchert received the Chinese Government Friendship Award in 2018, the Government’s top prize for foreign experts in China.

Mr. Ying Zhanwang has over 30 years of experience in the auto industry. He has a profound understanding of the Chinese market with deep insights into technological developments and vehicle production.

 

As the General Manager of Nanjing BYTON Electric Vehicle Corporation, Mr. Ying has played a key role in product industrialization readiness and in facilitating BYTON’s strategic collaboration with FAW. Nanjing BYTON Electric Vehicle Corporation is a subsidiary of BYTON focused on the company’s collaboration with FAW in relation to project development and industrialization operations.

 

Before joining Byton, Mr. Ying Zhanwang was the Chief Expert of Chang’an Automobile Co. Ltd. Since 1982, Mr. Ying Zhanwang has served in key positions at Nanjing Automobile, Chang’an Automobile, Chang’an Ford, Chang’an Mazda and Chang’an PSA, and was a key founding member of their joint-ventures. He successfully led the construction of three manufacturing bases for Ford, Mazda and DS, and has successfully launched several dozens of vehicles and powertrain products under the three brands across his career. His abundant corporate management experience covers technology planning and management, vehicle process, product development, quality control and other aspects of the automotive business.

Ms. Qingfen Ding is a senior executive in the auto industry. She has rich experience in cross-cultural team management and is skilled in crafting communication strategies and handling government affairs. At BYTON, Ms. Ding serves as Chief of Staff, with responsibility for BYTON’s public and government affairs, shareholder relations, HR management and major corporate strategic project communication and coordination.

 

As one of BYTON’s founding members, Ms. Ding established a high-profile network of government policymakers and industrial regulators with both national and regional purview. She was instrumental in crafting an innovative, cutting-edge and down-to-earth corporate image, and helped shape favorable media ecosystem for BYTON worldwide through a series of strategic communication campaigns. She has played a key role in important company projects and initiatives, such as the global headquarters setup in Nanjing.

 

Before joining BYTON, Ms. Ding was the general manager of public relations at Infiniti China, leading the premium automaker’s public communications strategies, media relations and corporate social responsibility affairs. She was integral to fashioning Infiniti’s public image in China as a sensible luxury auto brand through a series of corporate communications events, product launch campaigns and public event sponsorships. Prior to her work at Infiniti, Ms. Ding spent 10 years as a senior business reporter at China Daily. Her stories won first place for Best Chinese Journalism in 2009 and 2011, and she was one of seven reporters to be authorized by China’s State Council to cover the Chinese premier.

 

Ms. Ding believes experience is invaluable in life and that a positive, hardworking attitude is vital in any occupation. She enjoys doing yoga and taking walks in her spare time. Ms. Ding is married and has a son.

Mr. David Twohig is a seasoned automotive engineering executive with nearly 30 years of international experience in automotive design and development. He has developed a strong leadership and accumulated solid technical know-how and engineering capability.

 

At BYTON, he serves as Chief Vehicle Engineer, focusing on the core automotive Engineering disciplines of body structures, body equipment, chassis and thermal management, as well as ensuring that the different Engineering disciplines co-operate smoothly to ensure that BYTON’s future products have a consistent Engineering philiosophy.

 

Before joining BYTON, David was Chief Engineer at Alpine, and Head of Vehicle Engineering at Renault Sport. Through his leadership and team efforts, he successfully developed a truly groundbreaking sports car - the new Alpine A110, that spearheads the rebirth of the Alpine brand, and has even been favorably compared with established segment leaders like the Porsche Cayman. From 2009 to 2013, David led the engineering team responsible for the Renault ZOE as the key pillar of Renault’s ambitious Zero Emissions program, and currently Europe’s best-selling BEV. He also steered the development of the first generation Nissan Qashqai, a highly profitable model for Nissan, launching the dominant compact SUV segment in Europe.

 

David was granted the Mundy Award for Engineering by Autocar Awards 2018 for his great achievements.

Mr. Charles Cheng is a seasoned investment banker with over 20 years of cross-cultural management experience in investment and corporate finance in Asia, Europe and North America. He has successfully led billion-dollar financing and mergers and acquisitions transactions, including the largest Chinese investment in Africa. He has a solid background in global treasury, cash and balance sheet management.

 

As Chief Capital & Investment Officer, Charles is responsible for the capital and investment management of BYTON. With his strong network and capability in global capital markets, Charles has helped BYTON build a strong foundation in financial and corporate governance, as well as strengthen capabilities in fund raising, investor relations and capital management.

 

Prior to BYTON, Charles served as Senior Managing Director of the Investment Banking Division of Goldman Sachs China, and Chief Executive Officer of Investment Banking China of Standard Chartered Bank. Before that, he held various senior positions at Bank One, Toronto-Dominion Bank, Alexander Proudfoot Management Consulting, MetLife and Peugeot Automobile. Charles has been awarded many professional honors including "China Top Ten Finance Talent" by China Central TV Station (CCTV) and Peking University, in recognition of his achievements in cross border financing, mergers and acquisitions.

 

Charles was born in China and is trilingual in English, Chinese, and French. In his spare time, Charles enjoys singing in chorus and rowing.

Dr. Andreas Schaaf is a seasoned executive with more than 20 years of experience in the automotive industry. He boasts an in-depth industry background, diverse market experience and understanding of the future of mobility, underpinned by his strong leadership skills.

 

As the Chief Customer Officer of BYTON, Dr. Schaaf is responsible for BYTON’s global go-to-market activities including sales, marketing, digital services, aftersales and customer operations. He will help BYTON create its customer experience on multiple platforms, and lay a solid foundation for global market entry.

 

Prior to joining BYTON, Dr. Schaaf served as Vice President of Cadillac Europe and China successively and led a rapid growth of the brand in the Chinese market. Previously, Dr. Schaaf worked at the BMW Group for 19 years, responsible for businesses in Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe, accumulating extensive experience in product planning, marketing, sales, dealer network development, customer relationship management and new mobility services. As Managing Director of BMW Group India, he drove the company to become number one in the Indian premium car market in terms of sales, and successfully launched the MINI brand in the local market. Following this, he became CEO of BMW Group's mobility brand DriveNow, and led the swift global expansion of its ground breaking premium car sharing service.

Mr.Benoît Jacob is one of the world’s most foremost car designers, wowing drivers worldwide with his unique designs over the last 20 years and garnering numerous awards from recognized institutions and media establishments, such as Red Dot, IF and Good Design, among many others.

 

Before joining BYTON, he served as BMW Group’s vice president of design. Among his many achievements for the German automaker, he is responsible for the BMW i design and is credited for the highly innovative i3 and i8 electric cars. He also led BMW Group’s advanced designs, outlined future projects for the BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brands and headed the exterior design teams for several BMW models. He designed the BMW M1 Hommage concept car that was presented in 2008.

 

Mr. Jacob graduated from the Art Center College of Design Europe. In 1994, he began his career at Renault and was tasked with the exterior design of the Renault Sport Spider, the Renault Fiftie concept car, the Laguna 2 Salon and Estate and the Dacia Logan. In 2001, Mr. Jacob joined the Volkswagen Group in various international management positions to focus on advanced design.

 

The French native lives in Munich with his wife and son. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling as well as collecting and restoring classic sports cars.

Mr. Mark Duchesne is an expert in automotive manufacturing with extensive experience in building top performing teams and facilities at globally leading traditional and electric carmakers.

 

He joined Tesla Motors in 2011 and led several of its manufacturing divisions. During his five years at Tesla, he was integral in assembling the automaker’s team of experts for new electric vehicle production, led the company’s strategy for its unique car production plant and established operations strategies for its new vehicle systems. He also guided the strategy, design and implementation of a $300 million manufacturing facility that featured a state-of-the-art and environmentally friendly coating center.

 

His career began in 1989 at Toyota, where he started from the shop floor, then learned manufacturing process through the launch of four new manufacturing facilities around the world and was part of a team to establish the automaker’s first Lexus quality factory outside Japan.

 

He is married with three children. He loves spending time with his family and their activities. In his spare time, he participates in outdoor activities.

Mr. Tom Wessner is a senior supply chain executive with over 30 years of experience in the auto industry. He has an extensive background in finance and has shared his expertise around the globe, with over 13 years of living and working in Japan, Mexico and China.

 

Before joining BYTON, Mr. Wessner helped establish the innovative electric vehicle company Faraday Future, serving as its vice president of global supply chain for three years. Prior to that he was vice president of strategic procurement for Hawaiian Airlines. From 2009 to 2011, he directed the purchasing and sourcing for the Tesla Model S program during its critical product development stages. During his time at Tesla, he also established the purchasing and quality functions capable of attracting global suppliers to fuel the rapid growth and success of the Tesla Model S sedan.

Jeff Chung is a seasoned global engineering executive and product development leader with nearly 20 years of experience in developing innovative products and disruptive technologies in consumer electronics, imaging and networking. 

 

At BYTON, Jeff is Vice President of Digital Engineering.  His engineering team is tasked with transforming the standard in-car experience by merging traditional automotive functions with innovative consumer electronics technologies, thereby creating the smart vehicle of the future.

 

Previously, Jeff was at Apple, where he led system engineering teams in designing multiple Mac products, including the 1st generation iMac Pro, which is the most powerful Mac computer ever.  At Virtual Instruments, he was Head of Engineering and led global research and development teams working on software and hardware products, which used machine learning and data analytics to solve network storage performance problems.  During his time at Aptina Imaging and Micron Technology, he led global engineering teams working on camera systems, sensors and image processing.  He holds a MS in Electrical Engineering from San Jose State and a BS in Electrical Engineering from Calpoly San Luis Obispo.

Mr. Lianxiang Duan is a veteran vehicle engineering expert. In over 20 years of professional experience, he has accumulated a solid technical background and deep insight into the regulations for product admittance as well as license application.

 

Prior to joining BYTON, he worked as deputy director of the R&D center and vice president of Changan PSA, where his responsibilities included product planning and R&D, plant and product admittance, purchase and supply chain management, and JV development strategy. He has introduced many key models of DS into the domestic market. He also established a local R&D test center for Changan PSA.

 

Mr. Duan joined Chang'an Automobile in 1996 and worked there for over 20 years. He held many engineering and technical management roles in Chang'an Automobile and its joint ventures, including Chang’an Ford, Chang’an Mazda and Chang’an PSA, where he was instrumental in the localization of more than ten car models and engines of PSA, MAZDA and FORD.

Ms. Teresa Shi is a veteran financial expert with extensive experience overseeing funding and budgeting operations at a number of globally leading companies in a multitude of fields such as energy, mining and automotive industry.

 

Prior to joining BYTON, she was the finance director for Alta Devices, responsible for overseeing the company’s finances as well as funding and budgeting activities. Alta Devices is a U.S.-based solar developer acquired by Hanergy in 2014.  When at Alta, she successfully conducted evaluation for six of Hanergy’s overseas entities to help Hanergy meet its financial goals in a timely manner. Prior to joining Alta Devices, she was an Asia regional controller at Lear Corporation, the world’s leading supplier of automotive seating and electrical distribution systems, where she managed the financial and accounting performances of several of the company’s manufacturing plants. Most notably, she helped one of Lear’s biggest manufacturing plants in North America significantly save on operation costs and meet profit targets with diligent financial analysis and strategic initiatives.

 

Ms. Shi loves adventures, has a great passion for life and is willing to embrace changes and new directions. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, exercising and fashion. She is married with a daughter.

Mr. Andy Ball is a seasoned automotive engineer with over 20 years of experience in research and engineering operations in Europe and China. He is a skilled multi-cultural team leader and has a proven track record of piloting and developing new processes and methods, and delivering engineering program targets.

 

As Vice President of Program Management at BYTON, Mr. Ball is responsible for driving the development of BYTON’s product line in order to deliver high-quality vehicles on time. He will strengthen the program management processes to deliver on a global scale, allowing BYTON to achieve its goal of delivering different products, globally, on a single platform.

 

Before joining BYTON, Mr. Ball led Ford Motor’s engineering programs for several key platforms and models delivered across Asia, including Taurus, Focus, Fiesta, Escort and more. From 2011 to 2019, he worked as Global Chief Program Engineer at Research & Engineering Center in China, where he successfully led several car programs for China and other emerging markets. Before that, he served as Asia Pacific Chief Program Engineer in Germany, steering the tailoring of various car programs to suit customer needs in the markets including China, ASEAN, India and Australia. Mr. Ball also was key in building global multicultural teams as Ford increased its presence in the flourishing China market.

Mr. Robert Seidler is a world-class expert in the development of E/E (electrical & electronic) architecture and connectivity, adept at achieving exceptional results in highly competitive and changing environments. He possesses global experience including seven years in Asia, developing engineering growth capabilities with emphasis on product & process innovation. 

 

At BYTON, Mr. Seidler is responsible for electric vehicle E/E architecture, connectivity, cloud, and security.

 

Prior to joining BYTON, Mr. Seidler worked at Delphi as an Engineering Director, responsible for core engineering competencies globally. He has spent over 30 years at Delphi, and held a variety of engineering positions. During this period, he accumulated extensive experience not only in professional engineering technologies, but also in business development, technical sales, innovation, strategic planning, program management, and joint venture development and holds numerous patents.

 

In his spare time, Mr. Seidler enjoys golf, jogging, and outdoor activities.

Mr. Ray Huang is an experienced strategic development manager with strong global vision and expert knowledge of the Chinese market. He has been working with premium auto brands in China for over 10 years.

 

Before joining BYTON, Mr. Huang served as general manager of Infiniti China East Region, leading its sales, marketing and after-sales divisions. Under his leadership, the Infiniti China East Region had the highest sales volume for Infiniti China.

 

Prior to his work with Infiniti, he spent seven years at BMW in various positions, including in its sales strategy and network development divisions. He served as project leader of the BMW i network strategy in China and BMW Brand Experience Center and as a management associate for the BMW Group before transitioning into a marketing position at BMW AG and BMW North America, which provided him with his global business vision.

 

Huang graduated from Tongji University with a master’s degree in engineering. He is married with a child.

Dr. Martin Jäckel is a veteran business development manager with rich experience at both globally leading consulting agencies and a premium auto brand.

 

Before joining BYTON, Dr. Jäckel, who has a PhD in strategic management, was the general manager of business development and strategy at Infiniti China. He helped to develop the strategy that supported Infiniti to become the fastest growing premium auto brand in China in 2014 and 2015. Prior to his work at Infiniti, Dr. Jäckel was project manager at Monitor Deloitte and the Monitor Group, where he supported numerous corporate strategy projects including the formation of a multibillion-dollar joint-venture for one of the world's largest corporations and the post-merger-integration after a much acclaimed mergers and acquisitions deal in the chemical industry.

 

In his spare time, Dr. Jäckel enjoys diving, fishing and playing basketball. He is a die-hard fan of Borussia Dortmund, the legendary German football club in the Bundesliga. Dr. Jäckel is married and has a son.

BYTON’s first General Counsel, Matt is responsible for advising company leadership and operational teams regarding all aspects of BYTON’s business.  Matt is also tasked with founding BYTON’s global legal function. Under his leadership, the legal department’s principal mission is to be a business enabler while also protecting the company’s interests.

 

Matt is a genuine global lawyer.  Through roles based in New York, Paris, Beijing and Hong Kong, he has extensive international experience in Technology and Consumer Goods.  Prior to joining BYTON, Matt was Associate General Counsel at Lenovo, leading the legal department for Lenovo’s PC business, as well as for its EMEA, Asia Pacific and Latin America regions. Matt’s expertise – as well as his professional inspiration – is particularly concentrated on innovative, nascent businesses.

 

In his spare time Matt enjoys a variety of sports, free-diving in particular.
